Description **
An Epiphone DOT in classic Vintage Sunburst from 2003, built at the Qingdao factory (China) – a guitar with history and character. This lady has been played, which you can see on the fingerboard and in a ding or two on the headstock and the pickguard. The body finish is in very good condition, and the back of the neck has been sanded to a matte feel – it feels great!
We leveled the frets as well as we still could – next time it would be due for a refret. It also got a new bone nut. The guitar sounds wonderfully warm and open and has soul – and the way it’s set up now, you can enjoy it for many more hours. It plays amazingly light and direct.
We gave it a full setup – result: great playability and a smooth, rounded feel. The neck sits comfortably in the hand – a typical, slightly slim ’60s C profile, the kind you only rarely find on early China-made DOTs. It likely comes from the very first years of DOT production in Qingdao.
The original Epiphone ’57 humbuckers sound warm, punchy, and well balanced. Especially the neck pickup really sings when you add a touch of grit. The electronics crackle a bit – if you want to make it your main guitar, you might want to treat it to a new set of pots.
Bottom line:
A semi with soul and character – an honest workhorse that screams for stage and blues. A guitar with history and heart that’s simply a lot of fun.
From a purely economic standpoint, the work we put into this guitar wouldn’t really pay off – but the first time we played it, we immediately knew it must not die or end up as wall decoration.
