Epiphone ES-339 Pro P90 Wine Red Transparent combines the open character of a semi-hollow guitar with compact Les Paul-style dimensions. Rare finish, strong P90s and, after our work, a truly wonderful instrument to play.
Here we have an Epiphone ES-339 Pro P90 from May 2014 – and in the really rare transparent Wine Red (WR) finish.
We always keep an eye out for exactly these models, because they are simply something special. So far, we have only had 2014 models with P90 pickups in our hands. Later years do exist, but they almost always seem to appear in Pelham Blue.
The 339 is perfect for players who love the feel of a semi-hollow guitar, but find a classic 335 too large or too bulky. In terms of body size, it is only slightly larger than a Les Paul and practically identical in dimensions to a Casino Coupe. This makes it very comfortable against the body.
At approx. 3.27 kg, it is also pleasantly light – a real advantage on stage.
The neck is rather flat, feels very comfortable and slightly leans toward a D shape. The fingerboard also feels a touch wider than on a typical Les Paul with a 60s neck.
The factory fretwork, however, was – as so often – not really convincing. So we put in the proper work: the frets were carefully leveled and polished, and the guitar was set up perfectly. Now it plays buttery smooth and direct.
In our opinion, the installed Epiphone P90R PRO and P90T PRO pickups are really well done. Powerful, open and with exactly the right amount of character. There is honestly no real reason to swap them out.
Sound-wise, it is a real rock machine with a blues soul – but it also performs surprisingly well in jazz territory.
