This guitar here – this truly stunning Epiphone Les Paul ’56 Gold Top Black – is black. Yes, the ’56 did in fact come in black, too. And that’s exactly what makes it so special. Instead of the classic transparent back, the mahogany body here is not finished transparent, which gives it a very distinctive, almost elegant look.
The condition is mint with light play wear. It’s from 2014 and was built at the Qingdao factory in China. The neck on this ’56 edition is chunky – a real ’50s neck that sits firmly in the hand and delivers exactly what you’d expect tonally.
The Epiphone P90s sing beautifully and, in my view, don’t need any upgrading – like most good Epi P90s. What really matters here is the correct height adjustment: the distance to the strings makes the difference. The screw under the B string should be turned in a bit further – then the tone sits right in the sweet spot between humbucker and single coil: fat, open, direct.
Here you’re getting a very beautiful, very good guitar that doesn’t have to hide behind the USA originals in any way.
The frets have been leveled, everything is properly dialed in – it plays exactly the way you expect a good ’56 to play.
