Description **

This used Paula is a real little treasure! In Heritage Cherry with a flamed maple top, it stands there looking like it just came out of the egg – and that after more than 30 years. Incredibly well cared for, hardly played, and always handled with caution. I’m the second owner: before me it was in one owner’s hands for 30 years and seems to have mostly sat at home. You can tell immediately – only minimal signs of use. On the neck there are two tiny dents, about pinhead size.

We lightly leveled the frets, did a full setup, and also fitted a bone nut. Now it plays buttery smooth – with zero resistance.

Especially interesting: it has a long tenon neck, the kind you otherwise usually only see on the Bohemian Epis. However, the truss rod nut here is metric – on the Bohemian ones it’s a Gibson inch nut. The pots are also Made in Japan. To me it looks like they used parts from the Japanese Epiphone Elite workshop on this model.

The neck is pleasantly slim – almost a modern C – and feels like a dream in the hand. It sounds the way a Paula should: fat, warm, with great sustain and a singing note that instantly makes you grin. The original bridge pickup tends to feed back a bit at very high volumes. Depending on how you use it, you might want to swap it – but we deliberately left the original pickups in.

Bottom line: An exceptionally beautiful and well-preserved Standard with character – not only looks fantastic, but also sounds really good. Anyone who has had a Korean one from this era in their hands knows exactly what you’re getting here.
