Description **
The Epiphone SG G-400 from 2004 is an honest player SG with a slim neck, a fat tone, and exactly the right amount of patina – the kind you can feel, but never have to fear. It plays buttery smooth, sounds punchy, and instantly feels “right” in your hands.
With its nice, flat neck profile – almost Slim Taper – this SG feels comfortable straight away. The action is low, the medium frets feel just right, and everything about it makes playing easy and direct.
The slightly heavier mahogany body is actually an advantage here: it helps counter the typical SG neck-dive and adds more low-end foundation to the tone at the same time. Visually, it’s a total classic in that wine-red finish with trapezoid inlays on the fingerboard.
Tone-wise there’s nothing to complain about: the pickups are punchy, well balanced, and exactly what you want from an SG – rock, blues, classic rock… it’s all in there.
Of course it has been played. There are a few dings and dents on the body below the pots, one on the back, and a small one on the neck around the 2nd fret. We lightly filled the two rougher spots; everything else is simply part of an honest instrument with a story.
The frets have been leveled and everything has been properly set up – it now plays butter-smooth and completely stress-free.
And like with most Epiphone SGs, the same applies here: in terms of wood, neck and basic tone, it stands right up to the “original” – the only thing that’s simpler is the electronics.
