Description **
Squier Classic Vibe 50’s Stratocaster Relic is not a factory relic, but a guitar with a real story – first escalated, then rescued. Sound-wise, it is pure Strat; visually, it is the phoenix with two dragons: unique, wild and definitely not made for the mainstream.
We bought this Classic Vibe 50’s Stratocaster in Sunburst from someone who had tried their hand at aging/relicing. Let’s put it this way: the sunburst body had been treated to a small orgy of hammer and sandpaper – and at first, it was… not pretty.
We are not relic specialists, but we simply could not leave it like that. So we stepped in ourselves to limit the damage. We sanded the body, filled the hammer dents and then sprayed it with white nitro lacquer. In one area, we sanded the finish back again so that the sunburst comes through here and there. We also made the lacquer crack and then treated it afterwards – so the whole thing looks more coherent and not simply broken.
We replaced the pickguard with a cream-colored one – and engraved a phoenix with two dragons on it. Yes, exactly. And that is exactly what it should be called: The Phoenix with the Two Dragons.
The neck was sanded to a matte feel, we added suggested playing marks to the fingerboard, and the hardware was deliberately aged, yellowed and slightly rusted. Of course, it also got some dings and dongs from us – as you can see in the photos.
Technically, we brought it properly back to life: the frets were levelled and a setup was done. And sound-wise… well, that is exactly the point: this Classic Vibe is well known for a reason. Pure Strat – lively, open and clear. A model that is rightly praised.
Looking for a traditional Strat, but with character and soul? Here you go!
